Food / Farmer

The title card for both Food and Farmer.

Overview

Food and Farmer are the first and second episodes respectively of Bee and Puppycat: The Series. Both episodes were initially released on the Cartoon Hangover Youtube channel on November 6, 2014, and saw a later release on the now-defunct streaming platform, VRV.

Development

Food saw the introduction of Castaspella Wizard — referred to as Cas — to the series, where she would play a prominent role as a supporting character. Art and interviews created before the official beginning of the series refer to her as Merlin, a name later relegated to the Wizard family’s eldest sibling.

Deckard Wizard plays a prominent role in both Food and Farmer and elaborates on what can be gathered from his appearance in the pilot. These first episodes of the series establish his love of cooking and his deliberation regarding attending culinary school. Food in particular mentions Deckard’s employment at an unnamed restaurant, though it is not confirmed until Bee and Puppycat: Lazy in Space that this restaurant belongs to his brother, Howell Wizard.

Farmer marks Tempbot’s second appearance since her debut in Bee and Puppycat Part 2. In this episode, Tempbot’s voice is different from the one she had in the pilot, which is confirmed by later material to be a recurring aspect of her character. This quality of hers is explained in Lazy in Space, where it is revealed that there are countless different Tempbots that all share the same neural network, meaning that although this is not the same Tempbot, as indicated by her change in voice, she possesses memories of past temporary workers regardless of whether or not she had personally met them, as is implied by her statement when greeting Puppycat and Bee that she “hadn’t seen them in a while.”

Bee has a dream involving several multicolored Puppycats submerged in a floating bubble of water; upon attempting to pet one of them, however, she is electrocuted. After being startled awake, Bee texts Deckard to ask if he'd like to make a recipe she found in a magazine. After she gets dressed, she and Puppycat leave for the grocery store to buy ingredients. While at the grocery store, Puppycat tries to buy an assortment of weapons, only for Bee to remind him that he left his money at the apartment. After purchasing the ingredients and, with the leftover money, a pack of gum, the two head to Deckard's apartment.

Puppycat repeatedly sabotages Bee and Deckard's attempt at the recipe. One of these antics starts a fire, causing the kitchen to be filled with smoke just as Cas comes home from her job as a programmer. She helps put out the fire and subsequently reveals she had brought home lunch for Deckard, which she instead gives to Bee. It is while Bee eats that Cas reveals that Deckard had applied to a culinary school off the island. Deckard, seeming unsure of his ability as a chef, laments the fact that they are missing an ingredient to complete the recipe, prompting Bee to exclaim that she has to go to the bathroom, dragging Puppycat with her.

In the bathroom, Bee expresses frustration at having used the last of her money to buy gum. She asks Puppycat to procure a temp job for both of them, promising him that she will get him a leather jacket if he does. The two of them depart, unnoticed by Cas and Deckard, who are wrestling.

Summary - Farmer

Bee and Puppycat float down into Temp Space to be greeted by Temp Bot, who comments that she hasn't seen the two of them in a while. Tempbot finds them a job on Jelly Cube Planet, which, according to Temp Bot, not many other Temp Workers seemed to want to do. Bee and Puppycat are transported to Jelly Cube Planet and are greeted by a farmer, who assigns to them the task of retrieving the giant cherry on the other side of the planet, which Bee readily accepts.

Meanwhile, after having defeated Deckard, Cas points out Bee's absence and asks Deckard if he thinks it's strange that she “hasn't grown up yet.” Deckard insists Bee is just having a difficult job finding a job, to which Cas reveals to him that she saw his acceptance letter to culinary school and goes on to say that he shouldn't put off his future for Bee's sake.

While Bee is away, Puppycat waits for her with the farmer and his animals. Puppycat, uncomfortable, tries to leave under the guise of helping Bee with the job. The farmer assures him that that won't be necessary — that the cherry is simply a vehicle through which the true fertilizer, Bee, will be delivered to the crops. Puppycat, using his lazer beam and the gum to make a balloon, goes to Bee just before she can reach the cherry and reveals the farmer's true intentions of trapping her soul within Jelly Cube Planet for his animals to feed on. Bee takes the gum from Puppycat and, using a spade included in her uniform, slices the cherry open, freeing the souls of previous temp workers trapped inside the planet. She spits her gum into the open flesh of the cherry, causing the ground to sprout whipped cream bushes. The farmer initially believes Bee to be dead, but he quickly realizes otherwise when she returns to the other side of the planet and slaps him. The farmer asks Bee to spare him, as his livestock are innocent. Bee hands him the rest of the gum and steals the leaf atop his head before leaving.

By the time Bee and Puppycat return to Deckard and Cas' apartment, night has fallen. Bee notices Deckard asleep at the table and quickly leaves.

Bee, having not earned any money to buy Puppycat the leather jacket as she has previously promised, surprises him with an old jacket of hers from when she was a baby. Puppycat accepts the jacket, and the two of them fall asleep on the couch.
